Looking Back Robert Janicki 9781304542618 Books Reviews
To know Bob as he is today is one thing, to read his memories of this era of American history is totally different. I was literally shivering at some times while reading and couldn't stop the tears at others. I have a whole new and greater respect for all who served. May God bless you Bob, and all of the heroes that stepped up during this time of turmoil in this country's history.
A must read for all Americans.
I was born just after Vietnam ended. It has always haunted me. In school I wanted to learn more, but we never made it to that part of history. I met Bob and wanted to read his story. I was riveted, terrified, moved, and unbelievably changed after reading this experience. You are with him digging the trenches, skirting death, and barely surviving. Yet, as true Marines do, giving everything and more when there really is nothing left to give. I am honored to know this man, who was lucky enough to survive, and tell his story.
Looking Back will take you into the mud, the fox holes, the terror, the insanity and the tragedy endured by Vietnam Marine Bob Janicki during his 13 month tour from Sept 1967 through Oct 1968. From his first breath of unbearably hot Vietnam air as he stepped off the C-130 cargo plane to the moment his departing TWA airliner was high above the Da Nang base, the pages are full of the unbelievable struggles of war.
At the beginning of his tour Bob wonders why those who have seen action are reserved and aloof, but by the end of his time in Vietnam he was responding the same way to the new troops.
Bob doesn't just describe the heavy action - of which there is way more than one person should have to endure - but also all of the details of day to day activities that a civilian like myself would never know otherwise sun-baked clothes burning his skin, shivering in a monsoon drenched fox hole, the noises, the smells, the terrible tastes. Comradery like no other. Saying goodbye to a lifeless close friend. Guilt, hate, fear.
In addition to giving me the utmost respect for Vietnam Vets, Bob's story helped me understand what it must be like for a Vet to live with those of us who have not known the horrific experiences of war.
If you want to understand what some of your Marine friends, relatives and neighbors have gone through, dive into the world of Sgt Robert Janicki (Leech); Squad Leader; 2nd Squad; Alpha Company; 1st Battalion 3rd Marines.
I served with Bob in the 1960's and was recently given this book as a gift. I did not know what to expect from reading it. If you are interested in a factual account of what it was like to be a Marine infantryman in Vietnam read this book. Bob pulls no punches. A lot of his experiences will keep you on edge and let you see how dangerous it was for a Marine in Vietnam. You will experience his transition from being a scared newbie coming into combat for the first time to his transition to being an experienced combat Marine over his 13 month tour. He writes about his fears, living conditions, constant dangers and food and sleep deprivations. You will experience his battle experience and a way only he could tell by what he saw and went through. I highly recommend this book.
